At Rino Mastrotto, being a leather and fabric manufacturer for the luxury sector means paying increasing attention to improving environmental performance, respecting natural resources and innovating our production processes accordingly.
HEARTH is a leather that is the result of constant research and a strong commitment to reducing our environmental impact, particularly in the production of leather, marking a revolution for the industry and for the sectors in which leather is used.
HEARTH has the same characteristics as traditional leather, but with a lower environmental impact, as demonstrated by the research carried out.
As with any major innovation, external validation is essential, so we commissioned an in-depth study to assess the impact of this new product, specifically in the retanning, dyeing and fatliquoring phases.
We conducted a comparative cradle-to-gate Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), in accordance with ISO 14040 and 14044 standards, on 1m2 of finished cowhide, comparing the conventional production process with one in which the HEARTH innovation was introduced, applied to the retanning, dyeing and fatliquoring phases.
The system boundaries for the impact assessment of HEARTH leather production and conventionally produced leather included both the UPSTREAM and CORE (cradle-to-gate) phases and processes, with a particular focus on retanning, dyeing, and fatliquoring. The functional unit considered was 1 m2 of finished cowhide.
HEARTH leather is revolutionizing the fashion world by making a significant contribution to reducing water and chemical consumption. HEARTH offers the same qualities as our traditionally produced leather, but with a lower environmental impact.

* The inventory data and impact indicators refer to the retanning, dyeing, and fatliquoring phases involved in the production of 1 m² of finished leather. They are based on a broader comparative life cycle study conducted with Cradle-to-Gate approach in 2024 by a third party and subjected to critical review.
In addition to reducing water and chemical consumption in the retanning, dyeing, and fatliquoring phases, additional indicators were considered, as the new technology used to produce HEARTH enables more efficient use of other resources as well.
As part of this project, all indicators defined by the PEF (Product Environmental Footprint) method were analysed. However, the study focused on four relevant impact categories to further investigate environmental effects and identify the main contributors to the process footprint.

The production of 1m² of HEARTH leather saves nearly 38 litres of water compared to the conventional method, while achieving the same leather quality.
